Baking fresh and tasty bread at home

Baking fresh and tasty bread has all of a sudden become a popular activity among my group of close friends. I want to take part in the excited conversation about bread as well, so I’m reading bread machine reviews to buy one now. I don’t want to be different! However, there is a lot of jargon I don’t really understand. I heard some words like crust control, sourdough starter and jam cycles. Does a jam cycle mean a bread machine can be used to make jam? Will that work? I have never used a bread machine so I have no idea at all.
